Why a Lost Filling or Crown Needs Prompt Attention

Fillings and crowns protect teeth that have been weakened by decay, fractures, or previous dental work. When they fall out or become loose, the underlying tooth structure is exposed to bacteria, temperature changes, and chewing pressure. Without timely treatment, you may experience:

• Sharp pain or sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
• Further cracking or breakage of the weakened tooth
• Decay forming in the exposed area
• Infection reaching the tooth pulp, potentially requiring root canal therapy
• Damage to surrounding teeth or gum tissue

Even if you’re not experiencing significant pain, a lost restoration should be addressed quickly to prevent more extensive and costly treatment down the road.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Visit

When you come in for your appointment, Dr. Benjamin Shirley will examine the affected tooth and take digital X-rays if needed to assess its condition. Depending on the situation, treatment may include reattaching your existing crown if it’s still intact and fits properly, placing a new filling to restore the tooth, fitting you for a new crown if the original cannot be reused, or recommending additional treatment if decay or damage has occurred beneath the restoration.
We’ll work quickly to protect your tooth and restore your comfort. If a permanent solution requires lab work, we can place a temporary restoration to keep your tooth safe in the meantime.

What to Do If Your Filling or Crown Falls Out

If you lose a filling or crown, follow these steps until you can see us:

• Keep the crown or filling if you can find it—bring it to your appointment
• Gently rinse the crown and your mouth with warm water
• Avoid chewing on the affected side
• Use dental cement, denture adhesive, or sugar-free gum as a temporary cover (do not use regular glue)
• Take over-the-counter pain medication if you experience sensitivity
• Avoid sticky, hard, or very hot and cold foods

Do not attempt to permanently reattach a crown yourself. Improper placement can cause bite problems or trap bacteria beneath the restoration.
